She has worked in the medical field for 10 years as an RN in a variety of roles such as emergency medicine, perioperative care, and cardiac cath lab. Colleen is a member of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) and maintains specialty RN certification as a Certified Perianesthesia Nurse (CPAN) and Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA). Colleen has received recognition for patient safety, quality care delivery, and education. Colleen began her career working in a busy emergency department, completing a nurse residency program. After that, she moved into the perianesthesia setting. Since then, she has worked in a variety of environments, including private healthcare organizations before spending several years as a civilian nurse working for the U.S. Army. As a charge nurse and preceptor, Colleen began to train new-to-specialty RNs in the perianesthesia setting. It is here she found a true passion for education and staff development, pursuing active involvement in department nurse council meetings and advancing educational development programs for new graduate RNs. Her time creating updated policies, procedures, and staff training programs allowed her to research and write, reigniting a passion she had held since adolescence. In 2022, Colleen pursued writing more actively and opened her own business, RN WITH A PEN LLC, to offer content development and healthcare consultation services to companies seeking an inside perspective from someone who has delivered direct patient care. Colleen now works full time as a freelance health writer, bringing years of medical knowledge and experiences to content development. She has worked with a variety of clients, both small and large, developing personalized content for diverse audiences. She specializes in developing educational content, eLearning modules, and manuscripts. Colleen graduated Magna Cum Laude from Washington State University with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing and a Minor in Health Sciences. She continues to follow evolving trends in healthcare and greatly enjoys the dynamic role nurse writers play in modern healthcare.
